Snack Review: ドンタコス (DON TACOS CHIPS)

Ever since I came to Japan, I haven't had access to Mexican food so I settled for the next best thing: taco flavored chips.

Back in the states, I often indulged in  Chili Cheese Fry Ruffles Goodness or Sabritonesthe nuclear holocaust of Mexican flavored chips. Knowing that the Japanese palate is as delicate as a preteen's heart after getting dumped before her first middle school dance, I wasn't expecting much out of Don Taco's chips.

Presentation:

The bag is attention grabbing and displays two meaty tacos. Above the tacos, there is what appears to be a living ball of corn adorned with a mustache and sombrero. Señor Corn is gazing into an inverted version of the Kamikaze Rising Sun Flag which alludes to WW2 and Pearl Harbor. Don Tacos has identity issues.

Taste:

It's like a Dorito, but with half the size and taste

The chips are very crispy and light, coated with taco seasoning powder. They taste like Chili Cheese Fritos with less oomph. I was waiting for a hot kick that I have been conditioned to expect during my chip career in America, but it never came. Don Taco chips are anticlimactic.

The Verdict:

These chips are good if you need a quick snack or if you get cravings for Taco seasoning, but you can't get the real thing because you live in Japan.

It pales in comparison to its American counterparts, but it's not like they are bad tasting!

Don Tacos Chips  ( ドンタコスチップス)receive 3 out of 5 Sombreros.
